Materials
To complete this project you will need:
- DK (Size 3) Yarn (see size chart for amounts required)
- I used Cygnet Prism DK (100% Acrylic. /100g 300m) in shade Vivid 7116

- Darning needle

Abbreviations: US terms (UK in brackets)
- St(s) Stitches
- Ch Chain
- Sc (Dc) Single Crochet (Double Crochet)
- HDc (HTr) Half Double Crochet (Half Treble Crochet)
- Dc (Tr) Double Crochet (Treble Crochet)
- TC turning chain
Gauge:
- 2.5 repeats and 6 rows = 4in (10cm) in pattern using 4.5mm crochet hook. Use a larger or smaller crochet hook to obtain the correct tension.

- The body of the shrug is worked in a rectangle in rows and then seamed to create a cocoon shape
- The edging is worked around the arm holes once seamed
- Ch 3 at the beginning of the row DOES count as a stitch
- Ch 1 at the beginning of the row DOES NOT count as a stitch
- Stitch counts are shown in size order XS/S (M/L, XL/2XL, 3XL/4XL, 5XL)

How to make this Free Crochet Shrug Pattern
Row 1: Ch 150 (166, 174, 182, 190), dc in 6th ch from hook, *skip 2 ch, 5dc in next, skip 2 ch, dc in next, ch 1, skip 1 ch, dc in next; repeat from * to end, turn – 18 shells (20 shells, 21 shells, 22 shells, 23 shells)
Row 2: Ch 4 (counts as dc, ch 1, dc in top of dc, *skip 2 dc, 5dc in next (middle st of shell from previous row), skip 2 dc, dc in next, ch 1, skip ch 1, dc in next; repeat from * to end working last dc in 3rd ch of TC, turn

XS/S & M/L – Rows 3-44: Repeat Row 2
XL/2XL – Rows 3-48: Repeat Row 2
3XL/4XL & 5XL – Rows 3-52: Repeat Row 2
All Sizes:
Row 45 (45, 49, 53, 53): Ch 1 (does not count as st), sc into same as ch 1, ch 1, skip next ch1, sc in next, *ch 2, skip next 2 sts, sc in next (middle st of Shell), ch 2, skip next 2 sts, sc, ch 1, skip ch 1, sc; repeat from * to end working last sc into 3rd ch of TC
Fasten off, weave in all ends, continue to Seaming and Edging

Seaming
- Fold the longer edges together
- Leaving the shorter ends open, seam up the longer edge starting at the open edge for 2.5 inches – this should end at the middle of a shell on both edges (see photo below)
- Repeat seam on other long edge

Edging
Rejoin yarn in seam in the shorter edge of the sleeve and work in the round:
Round 1: Ch 1 (does not count as a stitch), hdc in same as ch 1, hdc in each st and ch sp around, sl st to top of 1st hdc to join round – 88 (88, 96, 104, 104)
Rounds 2-3: Repeat Round 1
Fasten off and weave in remaining ends, lightly block.
