Granny’s Shopping Bag | Free Crochet Patterns

So many of us want to do more for the environment, and replacing all our plastic & paper shopping bags is one easy change to help save the environment.

Reducing my plastic waste is one of my New Year’s Resolutions for 2021, so I am releasing this beginner crochet pattern for free, forever on my blog. I want to inspire as many people as possible to create their own eco-friendly shopping bags that are a generous size and actually useable!

This pattern is beginner friendly featuring only the basic crochet stitches and the ever popular Granny Stitch – my favourite!

I made my Granny’s Shopping Bag using Caron Cotton Cakes in shade Garden Oasis and I love the colours. They really remind me of hazy summer days spent shopping for Knick Knacks – and I can fit plenty inside this market bag!

Adding the Handle

Before beginning the handle, place stitch markers into stitch numbers 1848 and 56These will mark where the handle begins and where it will be joined.

Row 1: Ch 1 (does not count as a stitch), sc in same as ch 1, sc into next 7, turn. (8)

Rows 2-120: Repeat Row 1.

If you would like to increase the handle length, repeat Row 1 until desired length is achieved, ensuring that you end on an even numbered row.

Lay the handle flat, ensuring ensure it is not twisted, ready to join to marked stitches (48 & 56).

Fold the handle so you are working on the inside (WS) of the bag.

Working through both layers, sc into each st across to secure the handle to the bag.

Fasten off and weave ends.

How to add the crochet handle

Optional – to prevent the handle sdcetching when in use, with RS facing, join yarn in 1st st where handle and bad meet, working across end of rows, sc in each to end of handle

Repeat on the other side of the handle.

Fasten off and weave in all the ends.
