Learn how to crochet Linen Stitch with video tutorial

The Linen stitch which is also known as moss stitch, seed stitch or woven stitch, is the perfect textured crochet stitch for beginners to crochet. It only uses 2 of the most basic crochet stitches to make it. It’s perfect to add as a border to granny squares or afghans & blankets along with being used in cool weather accessories like my Linen Stitch Spiked Scarf design.

How to crochet the Linen Stitch| Free Crochet Stitch Tutorial

The linen stitch is such a simple stitch pattern to master. It uses double crochet (US single crochet) and a chain to create the fabulous texture and is created by working into the chain spaces on the next row over a 2 row repeat.

There are lots of reasons to fall in love with this stitch. Here are my top two:

It creates a crochet fabric with lovely drape
It’s new go to stitch to work into crochet garments from cardigans to scarves – you’ll be seeing a lot of this stitch pattern in my new crochet designs. It has a similar appearance to plain ol’ double crochet, but the chain space makes a lighter weight and less dense fabric.

All the texture without using too much yarn!
You know just how much I love the puff stitch, but it can be so yarn hungry and uses a lot of yarn! As the linen stitch creates a less dense crochet fabric, it uses less yarn, including less yarn that double crochet (US single crochet).

How to crochet Linen Stitch

For this tutorial I used the following materials:

5mm Furls Streamline crochet hook
Furls Wander Acrylic Yarn in shade Sunrise – You can read my review of this yarn by clicking here.

You can use any yarn with the hook size as recommended on the yarn band.

Chain in multiples of 2 plus 1 for the turning chain.

For this tutorial:

Ch 13

Row 1: Dc (Sc) in 2nd ch from hook, *Dc (Sc), Ch1, skip next ch*, Repeat between * and * to last stitch. Dc (Sc) in last stitch. Turn.

Chain 13, Dc (Sc) in 2nd chain from hook

Dc in next st, chain 1, skip next chain. Repeat to last chain

Dc (Sc) in last chain. Turn

Row 2: Ch1, Dc (Sc) in same stitch as ch, *Dc in chain space, Ch1, skip next stitch*, repeat between * and * to last stitch. Dc in last stitch. Turn.

Keep Practicing!

You can repeat row 2 as many times as you like to keep practicing making the half treble crochet stitch (US half double crochet).
