This free crochet market bag pattern is a quick and easy crochet project that comes with a full video tutorial so you know you will be completing this make in no time!

Plus you only need one self-striping yarn cake to make it! I used just 1 Lion Brand Mandala Ombre cake to complete my market bag and I love all the different colours they have to chose from! 

The yarn is soft and when worked in the offset mesh stitch pattern, it creates a stretchy crochet mesh market bag, perfect to fill up with all those locally made makes you’ll find on your shopping trips! 

I’ve used this yarn before in my Make With A Cake Shawl and I just knew it would be perfect for this bag pattern! I’m tempted to remake my Granny’s Shopping bag in this yarn too – although that bag is a bit bigger so may need 2 or 3 cakes for that pattern.

I’m also pleased that there’s no need to worry about filling the bag up with all my purchases! Alongside the stretchy fabric, the handle is extra wide to keep it comfy on your shoulder too!

Easy Crochet Market Bag Pattern

Skill Level: Easy

Materials:

To complete this project you will need:

• 300m (335 yds) Aran (Worsted) yarn
• I used 1 x Lion Brand Mandala Ombre (100% Acrylic. 150g/315m) in shade Tranquil
• 5mm crochet hook
• Darning needle
• Scissors
• 2 x Stitch Markers

•  10 stitches and 9 rows = 4in (10cm) over Off Set Mesh 5mm crochet hook. Use a larger or smaller crochet hook to obtain the correct tension

Finished Size:

• 27cm wide at base, 30cm tall from base.

Round 1: Ch 4, sl st to 1st ch to create ring, working into centre of ring, ch 1 (does not count), 8 hdc, join – 8 hdc

Round 2: Ch 1, 2hdc in each around, join – 16 hdc

Round 3: Ch 1, *hdc, 2hdc in next; repeat from * to end, join – 24 hdc

Round 4: Ch 1, *hdc in next 2, 2hdc in next; repeat from * to end, join – 32 hdc

Round 5: Ch 1, *hdc in next 3, 2hdc in next; repeat from * to end, join – 40 hdc

Round 6: Ch 1, *hdc in next 4, 2hdc in next; repeat from * to end, join – 48 hdc

Adding the Handle | Crochet Mesh Market Bag

Counting from beginning of round, place marker in the 45th and 53rd st (joining on handle marked)

Row 1: Ch 1, hdc in next 8, turn, leave remaining sts unworked – 8 hdc

Rows 2-41: Ch 1, hdc in each st across, turn – 8 hdc

To increase the length of the handle, continue to repeat Row 2 ending on an uneven numbered row.

Lay the handle flat and ensure it is not twisted.

Slip stitch to the 1st marked st

Fold the handle so you are working on the inside of the bag, working through both the handle and the bag, sl st in each st across to join

Fasten off and weave in all ends.
