How to do a double crochet. In the US terms a single crochet. I'm using a double knit yarn with 4mm crochet hook. You can learn using any yarn as long as you have as long as you use the corresponding crochet hook. So welcome back to another crochet tutorial with Cozy Rosie UK

Today we're going to be learning how to do a double crochet
0:14
In US terms this is known as a single crochet. So today I'm using a double knit yarn with a corresponding hook size of four millimeters
0:23
It doesn't matter which yarn you're practising with, make sure you have the corresponding hook size
0:28
So we're going to be starting with creating a slip knot. So you just create a loop, bring that working yarn through the back and just tighten
0:39
Pop that loop onto your hook and tighten pulling on the working yarn
0:45
So we're going to be creating a chain of 15 chains. And to do that, we start by just by bringing the working yarn over the hook and just pulling that
0:58
yarn through the loop on your hook. So yarn over and pull through. Yarn over, pull through
1:07
So that's three, four, five, six, seven, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, eleven
1:28
12, 13, 14, 15. So we have a chain of 15 here
1:38
What you will see is that one side it looks like they've got nice little Vs on there
1:44
and the other side will look more like a plat. For simplicity, we're going to work along the Vs here, okay
1:52
This loop on your hook does not count as a chain. This is your chain one directly under the one
1:57
directly underneath your hook and we're going to work into the second chain
2:02
So the second chain from hook. So as you can see, you've got two loops
2:09
We're going to insert our hook under that first loop under our hook
2:15
We're going to bring the yarn over the hook. Pull that yarn through the first loop on your hook and then we're going to yarn over and
2:25
pull through those both loops. on our hook You can see you created a slightly bigger hole That absolutely fine We not going to work back into there We going to work into this next chain here So insert that hook into the chain
2:42
We're going to yarn over the hook, bring that back through that loop
2:49
and then we're going to yarn over the hook and pull through those two loops that are left on your hook
2:55
left on your hook to go back to one. Again we're not working into this hole here. We're
3:01
going under this chain here. Yarn over the hook. Bring up a loop. Yarn over, fall
3:11
through both loops. There's our next stitch there. Yarn over the hook. Bring that loop up. Yarn over the hook. Bring that loop up. Yarn over the hook
3:25
over pull through both those loops on that hook insert your hook into your next
3:32
chain yarn over bring that loop up yarn over again go through both loops on
3:40
your hook there's the next chain put the hook through the hook through
3:46
yarn over yarn over pull through both loops so we're going to continue to
3:54
complete double crochet all the way along this row that we've created all the way down the chain
4:02
There's caught the yarn there. There's the next one
4:15
So insert the hook. Yarn over to bring a loop up. Yarn over
4:23
Pull through both those loops on your side. both those loops on your hook. Find that next one, insert that hook, yarn over, pull through
4:32
to bring up another loop, yarn over, pull through two. There we go. Continue to work all the way down your chain
4:54
and the final one right next to your slip knot yarn over bring a loop up yarn over pull through two Now we completed our first row of double crochets
5:13
The loop on your hook does not count as a stitch, but it is worth just counting those stitches that you've made
5:19
So, just make that along a little bit. So we have one, two, three, four, five
5:28
six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen and number fourteen is that little one there
5:39
So that's the first row. When you're turning your row to work back the other way, right to left, we have to complete a turning chain
5:48
So the turning chain for a double crochet is a chain one. So we bring the yarn over the hook and just bring that loop through
5:58
We can turn our work. And then you can see right underneath your hook here, you've got your turning chain
6:05
This is your first stitch. You can see your stitch by recognising those two loops to the V
6:11
And then you should see a slight hole that you want to aim into. Not this one, that one just there
6:17
So pop your hook through that hole, making sure you've got both loops of the stitch
6:22
Bring the yarn over the hook. bring it back through that stitch
6:28
with two loops left on your hook yarn over and pull through both loops
6:33
you can tilt your work towards you to find your next stitch
6:38
so we've worked into this one and this is the next one we're working into
6:42
so you just pop your hook through both loops of that stitch
6:47
you see there are two loops there I spit that apart of it
6:53
So we're going to yarn over the hook, bring a loop up, two loops left, yarn over, pull through both loops
7:03
And we can continue to work all the way down this row, doing a double crochet into each stitch
7:10
It's a bit fiddly when there's not much to work with
7:21
Just take your time. your time and work all the way down into each stitch making sure that you grab both
7:28
loops of the stitch on the previous row There we go Remember to tilt your work towards you if you can't find that next stitch
7:44
There we go. Remember you only have to start a point
7:56
Remember you only have to start a project once. So this fiddley bit only happens once
8:03
Quite important thing to remember. Once you get past the first couple of rows, you've got something more to hold on to and it's a bit more fun
8:11
So insert the hook, yarn over to bring a loop up, yarn over, pull through both those loops
8:19
That's squeaky yarn, sorry about that. There we go. And that's number 13
8:31
So we've come to the end. Now this is where things can go terribly wrong if we don't get that last stitch
8:38
So if you're not sure, you can either count the number of stitches you've already made
8:43
But I can see there's a bit of a lump here and I want to work into that stitch and I can see the both loops there
8:49
So it's worth just kind of encouraging that final stitch on. final stitch on, especially as a beginner, it's a bit more of a challenge
8:58
So there's loop one, there's loop, there's loop one, there's loop two, pop that onto your
9:04
hook, you're going to yarn over the hook, bring that loop up, yarn over, pull through two
9:14
And that's our second row done. You can see those nice vs all the way along
9:20
So you can just keep going. Remembering to do that turning chain, turning your work, working right to left
9:28
So find that first stitch that you're going to work into. This is your turning chain
9:33
That is your first stitch. Insert that hook under both loops of the stitch
9:39
Bring the yarn over the hook, pull the loop up, yarn over, pull through two
9:45
And that is how you double crochet. So you can just continue to work all the way
9:51
along in double crochet. So thank you for joining me today. If you have any comments or
