Crowning Glory Free Granny Square Pattern
This clever free granny square pattern play’s tricks on your eyes with the stitches creating different images using the negative space between the stitches. This granny square pattern uses only the basic stitches to create an open granny square pattern.

Crowning Glory Granny Square | Free Crochet Pattern
I love how this square makes different people see different things in the spaces created by the crochet stitches; Some people see bows and I see crowns!
Whatever you see, this pattern creates an interesting square using only the basic crochet stitches. It works up quickly and the open fabric is a stunning addition to any granny square blanket.
It has a nod to the chevron stitch square but the chain spaces between the stitches make the fabric more open.

Ch – Chain
Sc (Dc) – Single Crochet (Double Crochet)
HDc (HTr) – Half Double (treble) Crochet
Tr (DTr) – Treble Crochet (double treble crochet)
Skill level: Advanced Beginner
Materials:
- Aran/worsted weight yarn
- I used used 60m PaintBox Simply Aran 100% Acrylic yarn in the following shade:
- Shade 245
- 5mm Crochet Hook
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle
Gauge:
- gauge not essential – Use a larger or smaller crochet hook to obtain the correct finished square size.
Finished Size:
- 8″ x 8″
How to crochet the Crowning Glory Granny Square
Pattern Notes:
- Please read through the entire pattern before beginning, regardless of skill level. Please contact me ([email protected]) if help is needed to understand any part of pattern.
- This square is worked Rows
- Beginning ch-1 does NOT count as stitch.
- Beginning ch-4 DOES count as a Treble Crochet.
Row 1: Ch 27, sc in 2nd ch from hook, ch 1, skip 1, *hdc, dc, tr, ch 2, tr, dc, hdc**, ch 2, skip 2 ch, repeat from * 2 times ending last repeat at **, skip 1, sc in last, turn. (6 tr, 6 dc, 6 hdc, 2 sc, 6 ch-2 sps)
Row 2: Ch 4 ( counts as tr), tr in ch-1 sp, *ch 3, 2 sc in next ch-2 sp, ch 3, 2 tr in next ch-2 sp, repeat from * to across to ch-1 sp, tr in ch-1 sp, tr in last, turn. (8 tr, 6 sc, 6 ch-3 sps)
Row 3: Ch 1, sc in same, ch1, *(hdc, dc, tr) in next ch-3 sp, ch 2, (tr, dc, hdc) in next ch-3 sp, ch 2, repeat from * across to end, ch1, sc in top of ch4. Turn. (2 ch-1 sps, 3 ch-2 sps, 2 sc, 6, hdc, 6 dc, 6 tr)
Rows 4-12: Repeat Rows 2 and 3, 4 times
Continue to Edging
Edging:
Ch 1, place 26 sc evenly across Row 12, (sc, ch 1, sc), rotate to
work across row ends, place 24 sc evenly across, (sc, ch 1, sc) in corner, rotate to work opposite side of starting ch, 26 sc (in each st and 2sc into each skipped ch sp), (sc, ch 1, sc) in corner, rotate to work across row ends, place 24 sc evenly across rotate to work across Row 12, 24 sc (into end of each st and 2sc into each ch-3 sp), (sc, ch1, sc) in last, sl st to 1st sc to join.
Fasten off, weave in remaining ends.
