Filet Crochet Granny Square | Free Crochet Pattern

This free granny square pattern will introduce you to the easy filet crochet technique that creates the most beautiful patterns. 

Filet crochet is traditionally made using blocks of US double crochet stitches mixed with sections of open mesh stitches.

This introduction to the Filet crochet technique is in the form of a written pattern, but you will normally find that there is no written pattern for a filet crochet pattern – simply a stitch chart to follow.

How to filet crochet

Abbreviations

US Terms (UK terms in brackets)

St(s) – Stitch(es)

Ch – Chain

Ch Sp – Chain Space

Sc (Dc) – Single Crochet (Double Crochet)

Dc (Tr) – Double Crochet (Treble Crochet)

Skill level: Advanced Beginner

Materials:

  • Aran/worsted weight yarn
  • I used used 60m PaintBox Simply Aran 100% Acrylic yarn in the following shade:
  • Shade 250
  • 5mm Crochet Hook
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle

Gauge:

  • gauge not essential – Use a larger or smaller crochet hook to obtain the correct finished square size.

Finished Size: 

  • 8″ x 8″

How to crochet a Filet Crochet Granny Square

Pattern Notes:

  • Please read through the entire pattern before beginning, regardless of skill level. Please contact me ([email protected]) if help is needed to understand any part of pattern.
  • Beginning Ch3 DOES counts as double Crochet
  • This square is worked in Rows.

Row 1: Ch 29, dc in 4th ch from hook (skip chs counts as dc), dc in next 5, [ch 1, skip 1, dc in next] 3 times, *dc in next 6, [ch 1, skip 1, dc in next] 3 times, dc in last 2, turn. (6 ch-1 sps, 21 dc)

Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in next 2, [ch 1, skip ch-1 sp, dc in next] 3 times, *dc in next 6, [ch 1, skip ch-1 sp, dc in next] 3 times, dc in last 6, turn, (6 ch-1 sps, 21 dc)

Row 3: Ch 3, dc in next 6, [ch 1, skip ch-1 sp, dc in next] 3 times, *dc in next 6, [ch 1, skip ch-1 sp, dc in next] 3 times, dc in last 2, turn. (6 ch-1 sps, 21 dc)

Row 4: Ch 3, dc in next 2, [dc in next ch-1 sp, dc in next] 3 times, [ch 1, skip ch-1 sp, dc in next] 3 times, dc in next 6, [ch 1, skip ch-1 sp, dc in next] 3 times, working last dc in 3rd ch of turning ch-3, turn. (21 dc, 6 ch-1 sps)



Filet Crochet Granny Square

Row 5: Ch 4 (counts as dc, ch 1), skip ch-1 sp, dc in next, [ch 1, skip ch-1 sp, dc in next] 2 times, dc in next 6, [ch 1, skip ch-1 sp, dc in next] 3 times, dc in next 8, turn. (21 dc, 6 ch-1 sps)

Row 6: Ch 3, dc in next 8, [ch 1, skip 1, dc in next] 3 times, dc in next 6, [ch 1, skip ch-1 sp, dc in next] 3 times, working last dc in 3rd ch of turning ch-4, turn.

Row 7: Ch 3, [dc in next ch-1 sp, dc in next] 3 times, [ch 1, skip 1, dc in next] 3 times, [dc in next ch-1 sp, dc in next] 3 times, [ch 1, skip 1, dc in next] 3 times, dc in next 2, turn. (21 dc, 6 ch-1 sps)

Rows 8-13: Repeat Rows 2-7.

Rows 14-15: Repeat Rows 2-3.

Easy Crochet Granny Square Blanket

Edging:

Ch 1, rotate to work across row ends, place 24 sc evenly across, (sc, ch 1, sc) in corner, rotate to work opposite side of starting ch, 26 sc (in each st and skipped ch), (sc, ch 1, sc) in corner, rotate to work across row ends, place 26 sc evenly across rotate to work across Row 15, 26 sc (in end of each st and skipped ch), sl st to 1st sc to join.

Fasten off, weave in remaining ends.
