Herringbone Stitch Granny Square | Free Crochet Pattern

The Herringbone stitch is one that everyone should learn – it creates a really interesting texture and the technique to create the stitch can be applied to all the stitch heights.

It’s similar to the extended crochet stitches, but the loop brought up is worked straight through the the loop on the hook before completing the stitch.

In comparison to the Pike stitch, the stitches look normal when working back along the next row. 

I worked my square in 2 colours to indicate the different sized stitches and this also allowed me to explain the best way to change colours while working in rows so that colour changes are not noticeable.

The colour choices are completely up to you! You could work every row in a different colour, work the square in 1 solid colour or opt for a gradient yarn to see the longer colour changes.

Abbreviations

US Terms (UK terms in brackets)

St(s) – Stitch(es)

Ch – Chain

Ch Sp – Chain Space

Sc (Dc) – Single Crochet (Double Crochet)

HB-Hdc (HDHTr) – Herringbone Half Double (treble) Crochet

HB-Dc (HBHTr) – Herringbone Double (Treble) crochet

Skill level: Advanced Beginner

Materials:

  • Aran/worsted weight yarn
  • I used used 70m PaintBox Simply Aran 100% Acrylic yarn in the following 2 shades:
  • A – Shade 242 – 40m
  • B – Shade 202 – 28m
  • 5mm Crochet Hook
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle

Gauge:

  • 12 sts and 10 rows = 4 inches (10cm) in pattern using a 5mm hook. Use a larger or smaller crochet hook to obtain the correct tension.

Finished Size: 

  • 8″ x 8″

How to make this Herringbone Granny Square Pattern

Pattern Notes:

  • Please read through the entire pattern before beginning, regardless of skill level. Please contact me ([email protected]) if help is needed to understand any part of pattern.
  • Beginning ch-1 does NOT count as stitch
  • Beginning ch-3 DOES count as stitch
  • Complete colour change in final stitch in row before colour change. Carry unworked colour up the edge of the square
  • Pattern will also look great worked in a solid colour or different colours, changing colour every row

Special Stitches:

HB-HDc = Herringbone Half Double Crochet

  • YO, insert hook in indicated,
  • YO, pull loop through st and 1st loop on hook
  • YO, pull through remaining 2 loops on st

HB-Dc = Herringbone Double Crochet

  • YO, insert hook in indicated,
  • YO, pull loop through st and 1st loop on hook
  • YO, pull through next loop on hook
  • YO, pull through remaining 2 loops on st

Row 1: With A, ch 25, hb-hdc in 2nd ch from hook and in each across, turn. (24 hb-hdc)

Rows 2: Ch 1 (does not count as st), hb-hdc in each across, turn. (24 hb-hdc)

Row 3: With B, ch 3 (counts as dc), hb-dc in each across, turn. (23 hb-dc, 1 dc)

Rows 4-5: With A, repeat Row 2.

Row 6: With B, repeat Row 3

Rows 7-18: Repeat Rows 4-6, ending with a Row 6 repeat.

Rows 19-20: With A, repeat Row 2, upon completion of Row 20 change to B, continue to Edging.

Edging

With B, ch 1, rotate to work across row ends, work 24 sc evenly across, (sc, ch 1, sc) in corner, sc in each across opposite side of starting ch, (sc, ch 1, sc) in corner, rotate to work across row ends, work 24 sc evenly across, (sc, ch 1, sc) in corner, rotate to work across Row 20, sc in each across, ch 1, sl st to 1st sc to join.



Fasten off, weave in remaining ends.
