How to crochet a spiral granny Square

Learn how to crochet this solid spiral granny square which uses 4 different colours to create a stunning spiral effect which will brighten up any granny square blanket.

Solid Spiral Granny Square | Free Crochet Pattern

I have been longing to create this spiral granny square since designed the Spiral Sun Hat  earlier in the year.

I really love working the granny stitch in the round, but I wanted to create a square spiral, that captures the look and feel of a vortex.

This spiral granny square uses 4 different colours, which are all worked in the same round. Stitch markers will be your best friend to keep your stitches safe.

This solid spiral granny square can be worked in 2 or 4 colours, but you will still need to attach 4 strands.

Abbreviations

US Terms (UK terms in brackets)

St(s) – Stitch(es)

Ch – Chain

Ch Sp – Chain Space

Sc (Dc) – Single Crochet (Double Crochet)

HDc (HTr) – Half Double Crochet (Half Treble Crochet)

Dc (Tr) – Double Crochet (treble crochet)

Skill level: Advanced Beginner

Materials:

• Aran/worsted weight yarn
• I used used 60m PaintBox Simply Aran 100% Acrylic yarn in the following shades
• A – 245
• B – 250
• C – 242
• D – 202
• 5mm Crochet Hook
• Scissors
• Tapestry needle

Gauge: gauge not essential – Use a larger

or smaller crochet hook to obtain the correct finished square size.

Finished Size: 

• 8″ x 8″

How to make this Solid Spiral Granny Square

Pattern Notes:

• Please read through the entire pattern before beginning, regardless of skill level. Please contact me ([email protected]) if help is needed to understand any part of pattern.
• This square is worked in continuous rounds, with all 4 colours worked in the same round.
• Please be aware of colour change indications – the color changes are NOT made at the start of the round.
• To change colour, pull up a large loop after last stitch, place loop of next colour on hook and continue in next stitch.
• Beginning ch-1 does NOT count as stitch.
• Beginning ch-3 does NOT count as stitch.
• Pattern will also look great worked with 2 different colours instead of 4.

Round 1: With A. ch 4, sl st to form ring, *ch 3, 3 dc in ring, place marker in working loop, pick up next colour. Repeat from * with B, C and D. (Ch-3, 3 dc in each colour)

Round 1 of the Spiral Granny Square

Round 2: With A, *(2 dc, tr, 2 dc) around post of ch-3 in next colour, place marker in working loop, pick up next colour. Repeat from * with B, C and D. (4 dc, tr per colour)

Round 3: With A, *dc in next 5 (1st st may be hidden), (dc, tr) in next, (tr, dc) in next, leave remaining dc unworked. Repeat from * with B, C and D. (7 dc, 2 tr per colour)

Round 4: With A, *dc in next 7, (dc, tr) in next, (tr, dc) in next, leave remaining dc unworked. Repeat from * with B, C and D. (9 dc, 2 tr per colour)

Round 5: With A, *dc in next 9, (dc, tr) in next, (tr, dc) in next, leave remaining dc unworked. Repeat from * with B, C and D. (11 dc, 2 tr per colour)

Round 6: With A, *dc in next 11, (dc, tr) in next, (tr, dc) in next, leave remaining dc unworked. Repeat from * with B, C and D. (11 dc, 2 tr per colour)

Round 7: With A, *dc in next 13. Repeat from * with B, C, and D. Fasten off. Continue to Edging. (13 dc per colour)

It continue to add rows to reach your desired size square, simply repeat row 7 increasing the number of dc’s made before the (dc, tr) in next, (tr, dc) by 2.

Edging

Round 1: Rejoin in any colour, in 1st st after any corner, ch 1,*sc in next 13, (2 sc, ch 1, 2 sc) in last, sc around post of last dc, sc in base of dc; repeat from * around to end, sl st to 1st sc to join. Fasten off. (76 sc, 4 ch-1 sp)
