Master the Arcade Stitch with this free granny square pattern. The arcade stitch creates a firm, open crochet fabric that is a great choice for scarves and shawls.

Arcade Stitch Granny Square | Free Crochet Pattern

It’s day 7 of the Hodgepodge Granny Square crochet along already!

This square is a longer row repeat to achieve the repeat of the stitch pattern, but it’s worth it to achieve those diamond openings in the square.

This square is made only using (US) single and double crochets, creating large fans of stitches.

This granny square looks the best when worked in one single colour, but let your style shine through it you would prefer to work it in multiple colours.

Abbreviations

US Terms (UK terms in brackets)

St(s) – Stitch(es)

Ch – Chain

Ch Sp – Chain Space

Sc (Dc) – Single Crochet (Double Crochet)

Dc (Tr) – Double Crochet (treble crochet)

RS – Right Side

Skill level: Beginner

Materials:

Aran/worsted weight yarn
I used used 60m PaintBox Simply Aran 100% Acrylic yarn in the following shade – 202
5mm Crochet Hook
Scissors
Tapestry needle

Gauge: gauge not essential – Use a larger or smaller crochet hook to obtain the correct finished square size.

Finished Size:

8″ x 8″

How to make this Arcade Stitch Granny Square

Pattern Notes:

Please read through the entire pattern before beginning, regardless of skill level. Please contact me ([email protected]) if help is needed to understand any part of pattern.
Beginning Ch1 DOES count as stitch where marked
This square is worked in Rows.

Row 1: RS. Ch 31, sc in 2nd and 3rd ch (skipped ch does not count as st), *ch 3, skip 3 sts, Sc in next 3 sts, repeat to last 4 ch, ch 3, skip 2 sts, sc in last 2 sts. Turn. (16sc, 5 ch-3 sps)

Row 2: Ch1 (doest not counts as st), sc in same as ch1, skip next sc, *5dc in ch-3 sp, skip next sc, sc in next (the middle of 3), skip next sc, repeat from * to last ch-3 sp, 5dc in ch-3 sp, skip next sc, sc in last. Turn. (6 sc, 25 dc)

Row 3: Ch3 (counts as sc, ch 2), skip dc, *sc in 2nd, 3rd and 4th dc, ch3, skip [dc, sc, dc], repeat from * to last 5dc group, sc across 3 dc as before, ch2, skip last dc, sc in last. Turn. (17 sc, 4 ch-3 sps, 2 ch-2 sps,)

Row 4: Ch3 (counts as dc), 2dc in ch-2 sp, *skip next sc, sc in next (the middle of 3), skip next sc, 5dc in ch-3 sp, repeat from * to last ch-3 sp, 3dc in to ch-3 sp, turn. (26 dc, 5 sc)

Row 5: Ch1 (does not counts as sc), sc in same as ch 1, sc in next, *ch3, skip [dc, sc, dc], sc in 2nd, 3rd and 4th dc, repeat from * ending last repeat with sc in last dc, sc in ch 3. Turn. (16sc, 5 ch-3 sps)

Rows 6 – 17: Repeat Rows 2-5.

Continue to Edging.

Edging:

Ch 1, rotate to work across row ends, place 24 sc evenly across, (sc, ch 1, sc) in corner, rotate to work opposite side of starting ch, 26 sc (sc 2 in to each ch sp, and into end of each st), (sc, ch 1, sc) in corner, rotate to work across row ends, place 28 sc evenly across, (sc, ch 1, sc) in corner, rotate to work across Row 17, sc in each across to end (28 sc), ch 1, sl st to 1st sc to join.

Fasten off, weave in remaining ends.
