Puff Stitch Trellis Granny Square   Free Crochet Pattern

The 6th square to be featured in the Hodgepodge Granny Square crochet along will show you how to crochet a puff stitch and create a trellis lace using crochet chain spaces.

The added texture in this square all comes from the puff stitches which are seemingly random in their placement.

In fact, the stitch pattern is more repetitive than first thought, with the puff stitches being worked on top of the single crochet stitches, which anchor the trellis lace chain. 

This textured crochet granny square pattern will be a firm favourite, and the stitch pattern would work well for a lightweight crochet cowl too.

Puff Stitch Top Tips

The puff stitch is one what take a little practice to get your hook to go through all the loops on your crochet hook in 1 go. Here are some tips to help you complete the puff stitch:

• When bringing the yarn back through the stitch or chain space, bring your hook up slightly beyond the height of the row being worked
• Place your finger on the top of your hook as you re-insert it to bring the next loop up to prevent the loop on the hook getting smaller
• Practice; like all stitches, it wont be long until the “muscle memory” kicks in and your hook will work seamlessly with your yarn, and you’ll be pull through all those 7 loops in 1 go.

St(s) – Stitch(es)

Ch – Chain

Ch Sp – Chain Space

Sc (Dc) – Single Crochet (Double Crochet)

Dc (Tr) – Double Crochet (treble crochet)

RS – Right Side

Puff – Puff Stitch

Skill level: Advanced Beginner

Materials:

• Aran/worsted weight yarn
• I used used 55m PaintBox Simply Aran 100% Acrylic yarn in the following shade – 245
• 5mm Crochet Hook
• Scissors
• Tapestry needle

Gauge: gauge not essential – Use a larger or smaller crochet hook to obtain the correct finished square size.

Finished Size: 

• 8″ x 8″

How to make this Puff Stitch Trellis Granny Square

Pattern Notes:

• Please read through the entire pattern before beginning, regardless of skill level. Please contact me ([email protected]) if help is needed to understand any part of pattern.
• Beginning ch-3 DOES NOT count as st.
• Pattern will also look great worked with 2 different colours, changing colour every 2 rows.

Special Stitches

Puff = Puff Stitch

• yo, insert hook in indicated, yo, pull up loop, [yo, insert hook in same, yo, pull up loop] 2 times, yo, pull through all loops on hook

Row 1 (RS): Ch 29, sc in 5th ch from hook (skipped chs counts as ch-3 sp), *ch 3, skip 2, sc in next; repeat from * across to end, turn–9 sc, 9 ch-3 sps.

Row 2: Ch 3, sc in next ch-3 sp, ch 3, *puff in next ch-3 sp, ch 3, sc in next ch-3 sp, ch 3; repeat from * across to end, sc in last ch 3 sp, turn–4 puffs, 5 sc, 9 ch-3 sps.

Row 3: *Ch 3, sc in next ch-3 sp; repeat from * across to end, turn–9 ch-3 sps, 9 sc.

Row 4: *Ch 3, puff in next ch-3 sp, ch 3, sc in next ch-3 sp; repeat from * to last ch-3 sp, puff in last ch-3 sp, turn–5 puffs, 4 sc, 9 ch-3 sps.

Row 5: Repeat Row 3.

Rows 6-19: Repeat Rows 2-5.

Continue to edging

Edging:

Ch 1, rotate to work across row ends, place 26 sc evenly across, (sc, ch 1, sc) in corner, rotate to work opposite side of starting ch, working in sts and ch-sps, sc in each across placing 2 sc in each ch-3 sp (27 sc), (sc, ch 1, sc) in corner, rotate to work across row ends, place 26 sc evenly across, (sc, ch 1, sc) in corner, rotate to work across Row 19, sc in each st and 2 sc in each ch-3 sp across to end (27 sc), ch 1, sl st to 1st sc to join.



Fasten off, weave in remaining ends.
