Learning and Loving Crochet

Learning to Love Crochet

My love of crochet was absolutely instant and unconditional!

This is why my passion for teaching others to learn how to crochet is so strong. The last few weeks have been chock-a-block with new beginners joining the Cosy Crew and completing my Absolute Beginners crochet workshop.

With Valentines day around the corner, I think its time to share more about my loves for this wonderful craft along with some of my recommendations that will help you learn how to crochet and improve your skills.

The Joy of Completion!

I can remember the first hat that I finished and the joy and pride I felt slipping it on to my head to find that it fit and looked amazing. I’m not gonna lie that looking at that hat I made now – its not great. My tension was not even across my rows and I had made mistakes in some of the stitches.

But, I had made something with my own hands!

If you are starting out with learning to crochet, celebrate all your achievements. Don’t stress about your tension too much and expect mistakes. Its an opportunity to learn.

New Patterns = New Skills

I love finding new patterns to try. I am completely obsessed with granny squares at the moment. They are having a revival in the slow fashion industry and crochet featured heavily on the catwalks on Winter 2019.

I recommend the book below – Granny Squares Weekend so highly as they have lots of modern takes on how to put beautiful crochet squares together to make usable home wears and wearable items like headbands, hats and finger-less gloves. Plus the patterns work up quickly giving you that Joy of Completion in no time!

Tools of the Trade

I also love that starting out in learning crochet doesn’t have to be overly expensive (except your ever expanding yarn stash). I simple crochet kit (I love the one linked below) is enough to see you through the basics. In fact, for the majority of beginner patterns you will most likely only need 3 crochet hook sizes (4mm, 5mm & 6mm)

Most people have their favourite brand of hook – mine is Knit Craft. The more you practice, the more you will learn what you love. I need a soft grip to avoid strain and cramp in my thumb.

Share The Love

I would love to hear what you are loving about crochet. What are you loving to make at the moment? Whats on your hook?
