How to Crochet a Mini Easter Basket – Beginners Pattern

This simple, beginners pattern for a Mini Easter Basket is a great introduction to working in the round and learning how to crochet into the back loop only.

Using only a small amount of yarn, they are the perfect way to use up scraps of yarn you may have left over from other projects.

4mm Crochet hook

DK acrylic yarn in a light brown colour

Pattern

This pattern is worked in the round.

Each round is joined with a slip stitch to the top of the 1st Treble of the previous round, the Ch2 does not count as a stitch.

Round 1 – make an adjustable ring (or Ch4, Sl St in to 1st chain to create a ring). Ch 2 then work 10 Tr in to the ring. Sl St to the top of the 1st Tr to join (10)

Round 2 – Ch 2. Tr 2 into the same st as the Sl St then in each St around. Join with a Sl St into the top of the 1st Tr of the round. (20)

In Round 3 you will be working in to the back loop of the stitch only – BLO.

In this pattern, it will cause the basket to form when you slip stitch at the end of round 3.

Working in the back loop of the stitch can create a lovely ribbed texture when worked in rows. You can see a great example of this in my Twisting My Melon headband pattern.

Once you have Ch 2, yarn over the hook as normal to begin a Treble stitch. Instead of going under both loops of the stitch (which appears like a V) you put your hook through the back loop only. Round 4 is worked through both loops of the stitch as normal.

Round 3 – Ch2. In BLO, in the same St as Sl St, Tr. Tr in BLO in each st around. Sl St to join to the 1st Tr in the round(20)

Round 4 – Ch 2. Tr in to the same st as Ch2 and then in each st around. Sl St to join to the 1st Tr in the round (20)

Do not fasten off

Make the Handle

Ch 24. Skip 12 st and sl st chain in to 13th stitch around to attached the handle to the other side of the basket. Take care to ensure your chain is not twisted before attaching.

Ch 1, HTr into 12th St from chain (1st to the left of Sl St). Work back along the chain under the top loop only HTr in to each Ch. Sl St to join to 2nd Tr in round 5. Fasten off and weave in ends
