It’s important to note that when you are counting your chain, the slip knot does not count as a stitch! It’s just the knot to secure the beginning of your crochet project.

Make a Slip Knot Tutorial

For this tutorial I used the following materials:

You can use any yarn with the hook size recommended on the yarn band.

Instuctions:

  1. Begin with creating a loop placing the working yarn (coming out of the ball) over the top of the tail
  2. Bring the working yarn behind the loop
  3. Pull the working yarn through the middle of the loop with either your fingers or crochet hook
  4. Grab both strands of yarn and gently pull on the yarn coming through the loop to tighten the slip knot
  5. Place the loop over your hook and gently pull on the strands to secure to the hook.

You loop on the hook should be snug but not tight. You should be able to move the yarn up and down the hook.

2. Bring the working yarn behind the loop

3. Pull the working yarn up through the middle of the loop
