Teatime is best enjoyed in a quiet moment to relax, but life isn’t always like that – this free crochet teapot cozy will allow teatime to be disrupted and you tea will still be warm, when you’re ready for it.

This pattern will show you how to create a teapot cozy with an opening for both the spout and the handle using a button to secure the teapot cozy around the base.

The overly textured tea cosy is created using the blackberry stitch all over to trap as much heat in as possible. This is the same reason for using a bulky / chunky weight yarn, for better heat insulation.

Pattern Inspiration

This pattern was originally designed as an exclusive pattern for Happily Hooked Magazine for their Color of the Year magazine that was published in August 2022.

In case you didn’t know, the colour of the year for 2022 was Very Peri – which is described as representing the transitional phase we are moving through.

Every time I looked at the colour, I kept being reminded of summer fruits and I always love creating patterns using bold texture – when I discovered the blackberry stitch, I was sold  and the Blackberry Teapot Cosy was designed!

What yarn is best for a teapot cosy?

I have designed so many teapot cosy’s, from a Christmas Pudding through to a simple striped cozy; and every time, I have used 100% acrylic yarn.

Acrylic yarn is designed to mimic sheep’s wool with great heat retaining properties. This makes acrylic yarn a great choice for a teapot cozy, but for this pattern, I wanted to try working with a more luxury yarn to see if the finished project would be even better.

In the picture below, I used James C Brett Marble Chunky, 100% acrylic (200g, 312 m) in shade MC15 which has a deeper purple tone with marbled colour changes. This is a great yarn to work with and there are 55 other colours to chose from in this range!

In the main images, which feature the colour of the year, I REALLY treated myself with this yarn choice; I used Malabrigo Chunky in the shade Periwinkle.

Malabrigo Chunky is what I consider a luxury yarn; not because of the price (although, it’s more than I usually budget for), but because of the fibre content. Malabrigo Chunky uses 100% merino wool which is harvested from their own free-range sheep- and wow was it a pleasure to work with.

The yarn comes in hanks that need to be wound before use. It is also dyed on site so there maybe some variation between the shades. I used 2 hanks to make my teapot cosy and the smell of vinegar to lock the dye in was a surprise – don’t worry, the scent soon faded.

Using a luxury yarn for this teapot made it feel like an extra special project that I will be gifting to my mum for Christmas this year – along with a new teapot to match – she’s such a tea lover that it’s a perfect handmade gift.
