Modern Granny Stripe Blanket Pattern | Free Crochet Patterns

I am a massive fan of the Granny stitch and just how versatile it is for so many different crochet patterns. So far, I've featured the stitch it at least 15 different patterns from a tea pot cosy through to a headband!

The Scrappy Granny Stripes Blanket was born out of a need to use up all my scrap yarn and left over half balls of yarn from a mammoth season of selling my finished crochet patterns during Autumn and Winter 2020.

You can make this blanket with any sized yarn and even with one or more strands too! Which makes it a really good stash buster crochet pattern too!

If you've never worked with more than one strand of yarn, you can read all my tips and tricks here.

Skill Level: Easy

Materials:

You can use any yarn you have in your stash to make this blanket or choose to use multiple strands of yarn like I did to use up everything you have in your stash pile.

The simplest way to check what size your blanket will be, is to measure the size of the chain you’ve made. It’s worth noting that your chain length will change a little once you’ve started working stitches into it, so give it a light stretch when you’re measuring it.

If you want to ensure the exact finished size of your blanket, you will need to make a gauge swatch with the yarn and hook you have chosen, and calculate your starting chain based on the number of stitches within your 4 inch/10cm square. Click here to read about how to check your tension and make a gauge swatch to calculate your starting chain.

If you are choosing to use multiple strands of yarn, stick to yarns that are made with the same materials. For example: don’t use a 100% acrylic yarn with a 80% Acrylic & 20% wool yarn, make sure the strands are all the same fibre. You can also use differently sized yarns alongside each other! You don’t have to use 2 strands of DK/size 3 yarn, but working out the hook size that works best would be a bit of trial and error. Remember to consistently use the same sized strands throughout your project to prevent your gauge changing.

With your first colour choice, chain multiples of 3 plus 3 for the foundation chain. e.g. Ch93 (3 x 30 plus 3 for the foundation chain)

Row 1: Dc in 4th chain from hook, Ch1, *skip 2 ch, 3Dc into next ch, Ch1*,

Row 1 Cont.: Repeat between * and * to last 2 Chs. Skip 1 ch, Dc into last chain. Turn.

Row 2: Ch3 (counts as Dc), in same St as Ch3 Dc, Ch1, *working into Ch Sp between granny clusters, 3Dc, Ch1*. Repeat between * and * to end, Dc in top of Ch3. Turn.

Row 3 onwards: continue to repeat row 2 until you have reached your desired length of blanket.

Once you have reached the length you want to make your blanket you can add a border. You can make your border in any colour, but continue to use the same sized yarn and number of strands you used to make your blanket.
