Create a vintage inspired granny square using the Peacock Fan stitch pattern. This Art Deco inspired granny square pattern will have you dreaming of the Arts & Crafts Era.

Vintage Granny Square Pattern | Free Crochet Pattern

This square reminds me strongly of the Art deco period which lead on to the Art's and Crafts movement.


It put's me in mind of the flapper dresses, finger waves and dapper dressed gentleman in times gone by.


The peacock fan stitch pattern only uses 2 stitches. One of them is one of the largest commonly used, the US Double Treble Crochet!


It's a great square to practice those taller stitches where you have to wrap the yarn around the hook 3 times.

Abbreviations

US Terms (UK terms in brackets)

St(s) - Stitch(es)

Ch - Chain

Sc (Dc) - Single Crochet (Double Crochet)

DTr (TTr) - Double Treble Crochet (Triple Treble Crochet)


Skill level: Beginner


Materials:

  • Aran/worsted weight yarn
  • I used used 60m PaintBox Simply Aran 100% Acrylic yarn in the following shade - 202
  • 5mm Crochet Hook
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle


Gauge:

  • gauge not essential - Use a larger or smaller crochet hook to obtain the correct finished square size.


Finished Size: 

  • 8" x 8"

How to crochet the Peacock Fan Granny Square

Pattern Notes:

  • Please read through the entire pattern before beginning, regardless of skill level. Please contact me ([email protected]) if help is needed to understand any part of pattern.
  • This square is worked in the round
  • If “skip” is followed by parentheses the sts in the parentheses is what will be skipped from the previous round
  • Beginning ch-1 does NOT count as stitch.
  • Beginning ch-5 DOES count as Double Treble Crochet.


Row 1: Ch 29, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 2, *skip 5, 13 dtr in next, skip 5, sc in next; repeat from * across to last 2, sc in last 2, turn.


Row 2: Ch 5 (counts as dtr), dtr in same, 2 dtr in next, ch 4, skip 6 dtr, sc in next, ch 4, skip 6 dtr, (dtr, ch 1, dtr) in next sc, ch 4, skip 6 dtr, sc in next, ch 4, skip 6 dtr dtr in next 2 , 2dtr in last, turn.

Row 3: Ch 1 (does not count as st), sc in next 3, *skip (dtr, ch-4 sp), 13 dtr in next sc, skip (ch-4 sp, dtr) sc into ch-1 sp; repeat from * across to last ch-4 sp, skip (ch-4, dtr), sc in last 3,turn.


Row 4-8: Repeat Rows 2-3.



Continue to edging.


Easy Crochet Granny Square Blanket

Edging:

Ch 1, rotate to work across row ends, place 25 sc evenly across, (sc, ch 1, sc) in corner, rotate to work opposite side of starting ch, 25 sc (into end of each st), (sc, ch 1, sc) in corner, rotate to work across row ends, place 25 sc evenly across, ch 4, rotate to work across Row 8, 25 sc evenly, (sc, ch1, sc) in last, sl st to 1st sc to join.

Fasten off, weave in remaining ends, block to size.
