This is one of those squares that I hope you don’t have to make many of during the course of your In The Mood blanket, but it does feature an interesting stitch; the paired half double crochet.

The stitch is worked in a way that’s similar to the half double crochet decrease, but it doesn’t change the stitch count in the row or round that it is used.

Pattern Details – phdc Granny Square

Materials

  • Any DK/Size 3 yarn – I used used Hayfield Spirit DK (80% acrylic, 20% wool) 100g 354m/377yds in shade 0408 (Sundown)
  • 35-50m per square (estimated maximum of 2700m for all 54 squares to complete square
  • 4mm Crochet Hook
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle

Gauge

gauge not essential – Use a larger or smaller crochet hook to obtain the correct finished square size.

Finished Size

  • each square is designed to be 6″ x 6″

How to crochet the phdc granny square

phdc Granny Square Pattern

Round 1: Ch 4, sl st to create ring, working into ring, ch 3 (counts as dc), 3dc, ch 2, [4dc, ch 2] 3 times, join – 16 dc, 4 ch-2 sps

Round 2: Ch 2 (does not count), dc in same, *dc in each to corner, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in corner; repeat from * to end, join – 32 dc, 4 ch-2 sps

Round 3: Ch 1 (does not count), phdc in same and next, ch 1 *[phdc across next 2 sts, ch 1] around to corner, (2 hdc, ch 2, 2 hdc) in corner; repeat from * to last corner, phdc across next 2 sts, ch 1, join to top of 1st phdc – 16 phdc, 16 ch-1 sps, 16 hdc, 4 ch-2 sps

Round 4: Ch 2, [dc in top of phdc, dc in ch-1 sp] 3 times, dc in next 2 hdc, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in corner; *dc in next 2 hdc, [dc in top of next phdc, dc in ch-1 sp] 4 times, dc in next 2 hdc, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in corner; repeat from * to last corner, dc in next 2 hdc, dc in top of next phdc, dc in ch-1 sp, join – 64 dc, 4 ch-2 sps

Round 5: Ch 1, phdc in same and next, ch 1, *[phdc across next 2 sts, ch 1] around to corner, (2 hdc, ch 2, 2 hdc) in corner; repeat from * to last corner, [phdc across next 2 sts, ch 1] 3 times, join to top of 1st phdc – 32 phdc, 32 ch-1 sps, 16 hdc, 4 ch-2 sps

Round 6: Ch 2, [dc in top of phdc, dc in ch-1 sp] 5 times, dc in next 2 hdc, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in corner; *dc in next 2 hdc, [dc in top of next phdc, dc in ch-1 sp] 8 times, dc in next 2 hdc, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in corner; repeat from * to last corner, dc in next 2 hdc, [dc in top of next phdc, dc in ch-1 sp] 3 times, join – 96 dc, 4 ch-2 sps

Round 7: Ch 1, *hdc in each around to corner, (hdc, ch 2, hdc) in corner; repeat from * to last corner, hdc in each around to end, join – 104 hdc
