This modern crochet coaster pattern combines 3 different crochet stitches to create a lightly textured coaster that will showcase your crochet skills for all to see.

The colour way used in this pattern can easily be updated to match your own favourite colours and you can choose to use 2 or more colours to show off those stitches.

Skill Level: Easy

Materials:

  • 20m of any worsted /Aran weight cotton or cotton blend.
  • I used Knitcraft Cotton Blend 50% acrylic, 50% cotton (100g, 215m) in the following 3 colours
  • A -Hot Pink 8m
  • B- White 6m
  • C- Lilac 6m
  • 5mm hook
  • Scissors
  • Darning needle

Abbreviations: US terms (UK in brackets)

St(s)                             Stitches

Dc (Tr)                         Double Crochet (Treble Crochet)

Dc-spike (tr-spike) 3dc with long dc in middle of cluster

V-st                               V-Stitch

Gauge:

  • Gauge is not essential for this pattern.

Finished Size:

  • 5″ square

Pattern Notes:

  • This pattern is worked in the round.
  • If using multiple colours, it is recommended to fasten off after each round. If using 1 colour, you will only need to fasten off after round 1.
  • Beginning ch-4 counts as (dc, ch 1) throughout.
  • Beginning ch-3 counts as dc throughout.
  • Each round should be joined in any ch-3 sp
  • It is recommended to place markers in ch-3 sps for ease of finding them.

Special Stitches

v-st = (dc, ch 1, dc) in indicated sp/st

dc-spike = dc in sp between 3-dc group, long dc in ch-1 sp of v-st 2 rounds below, dc in same sp as last dc

long dc = yo, insert hook in ch-1 sp 2 rounds below, yo, pull loop up to height of current round, [yo, pull through 2 loops] 2 times

How to crochet this free square crochet coaster pattern

Round 1: With A, Ch 4, sl st in 1st ch to create ring, working in centre of ring, ch 4 (counts as dc, ch 3), [dc, ch 1, dc, ch 3] 3 times, dc, ch 1, join to 3rd ch of skipped chs, FO. 4 V-st, 4 ch-3 sps

Round 2: With B, Join in any ch-3 sp, ch 4 (counts as dc ch 1), (dc, ch 3, V-St) in same, working in ch-sps only, V-st in next ch-1 sp, *(V-st, ch 3, V-st) in next ch-3 sp, V-st in next ch-1 sp; repeat from * around, join to 3rd ch, sl st in each to next ch-3 sp. 12 V-st, 4 ch-3 sps

Round 3: Join in any ch-3 sp, ch 4 (counts as dc, ch 1), (dc, ch 3, v-st) in same, skip next v-st, working between v-sts, 3dc between each to last ch-1 sp, skip last v-st, *(v-st, ch 3, v-st) in next ch-3 sp, skip next v-st, working between v-sts, 3dc between each to last v-st; repeat from * to last v-st of round, join to 3rd ch, sl st in each to next ch-3 sp. 8 3-dc groups, 8 v-st, 4 ch-3 sps

*note for Round 4 – pattern may seem to ripple after Round 4, this will be corrected on Round 5

Round 4: With B, ch 3 (counts as dc), (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in same, skip v-st, working between 3dc groups, 3dc Spike in each sp across to next v-st, skip v-st, *(3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch-3 sp, skip v-st, 3dc Spike in each sp across to next ch-3 sp, skip v-st; repeat from * around to beginning of round, join to 3rd ch, sl st in each to next ch-3 sp. 9 3-dc Spike, 8 3-dc groups, 4 ch-2 sps

*Note for Round 5 – v-st will be worked in long dc except when working in corner 3dc groups.

Round 5: With C, ch 4, [dc, ch 3, v-st] in same, skip 1 dc, v-st in next, [skip 2, v-st in next] 4 times, *(v-st, ch 3, v-st) in next ch-2 sp, skip 1, v-st in next, [skip 2, v-st in next] 4 times; repeat from * around, join to 3rd ch, sl st in each to next ch-3 sp. 30 v-st, 4 ch-2 sps
