Sometimes it’s hard to remember that there are almost just 3 main stitches that when worked in different formations make up all the crochet patterns in the whole world.

The Sedge stitch is a testament to how the basic stitches can be worked together and create something so pretty – and squishy. 

One of the major themes with the Hodgepodge Blanket CAL  is the many techniques used to create all the different squares; this square is to remind you how sometimes simplicity can be beautiful.

Sedge Stitch Granny Square Pattern

Abbreviations

US Terms (UK terms in brackets)

St(s) – Stitch(es)

Ch – Chain

Sc (Dc) – Single Crochet (Double Crochet)

HDc (HTr) – Half Double (Treble) Crochet

Dc (Tr) – Double Crochet (Treble Crochet)

Skill level: Beginner

Materials:

  • Aran/worsted weight yarn
  • I used used 80m PaintBox Simply Aran 100% Acrylic yarn in the following shade – 245
  • 5mm Crochet Hook
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle

Gauge:

  • gauge not essential – Use a larger or smaller crochet hook to obtain the correct finished square size.

Finished Size: 

  • 8″ x 8″

How to crochet the Sedge Stitch Granny Square

Pattern Notes:

  • Please read through the entire pattern before beginning, regardless of skill level. Please contact me ([email protected]) if help is needed to understand any part of pattern.
  • This square is worked in rows.
  • Beginning ch-1 does NOT count as stitch.

Row 1: Ch29, (sc, hdc, dc) into 2nd ch from hook, *skip 2 ch, (sc, hdc, dc) in next; repeat from * across to last 3 sts, skip 2, sc in last turn. (9 sedge sts, 1 sc)

Row 2: Ch1 (does not count as st here and throughout), (sc, hdc, dc) in same as ch 1, *skip dc, hdc, (sc, hdc, dc) in sc from previous row; repeat from * across to last 3 sts, skip (dc, hdc), sc in last, turn. (9 sedge sts, 1 sc)

Short Wave Stitch Granny Square Pattern

Rows 3-18: Repeat Row 2.

Continue to edging.

Easy Crochet Granny Square Blanket

Edging:

Ch 1, rotate to work across row ends, place 24 sc evenly across, (sc, ch 1, sc) in corner, rotate to work opposite side of starting ch, 24 sc (into end of each st), (sc, ch 1, sc) in corner, rotate to work across row ends, place 24 sc evenly across, ch 4, rotate to work across Row 18, 24 sc evenly, (sc, ch 1, sc) in last, sl st to 1st sc to join.

Fasten off, weave in remaining ends.
