You’ll be creating beanies that are so warm, cosy and squishy that all your friends will want one too! Which is ok, because you can complete most sizes in just 1 hour!

Materials:

Paintbox Yarns Simply Chunky (100g/3.5oz 136m/149yd)
1 ball will make all sizes

I used 324 Pistachio Green
8mm (Size I/9) crochet hook
Darning needle
Scissors
Stitch Markers (optional)
Faux Fur pompom (optional)

Gauge: 12 stitches and 7 rows = 4in (10cm) over HTr (Dc) using 8mm crochet hook. Use a larger or smaller crochet hook to obtain the correct tension.

Stitch Abbreviations: UK Terms (US terms in brackets)

St(s) Stitches

Ch Chain

BLO Work into the back loop of the stitch only

HTr (HDc) Half Treble Crochet (Half Double Crochet)

Sl St Slip Stitch

20 (31, 45) Stitch count for each size starting with the smallest size

Special Stitches:

Half Treble Crochet (HTr) (US Terms – Half Double Crochet HDc)

Yarn over hook.
Insert hook into stitch.
Yarn over and draw up a loop. (3 loops on hook)
Yarn over and pull through all 3 loops.

Pattern Notes:

Whatever your skill level with crochet, I would always recommend reading through this pattern before beginning. Get in touch if you need any help completing the pattern.
This pattern is worked in rows to create a rectangle before slip stitching the sides together.
Go through the pattern highlighting the stitch count required for that size.
Ch1 does not count as a stitch.
You will be using a bigger hook that your yarn suggests to create a looser, stretchy fabric
Make sure you check your stitch count every row
Place a stitch marker in the 1st & last stitches to help you identify when each row starts and ends. This will prevent your rectangle turning in to a triangle

How to Crochet This Easy Ribbed Beanie

Ch 21 (23, 25, 27, 29, 32, 36, 38)

Row 1. HTr in 2nd ch and each chain across. Turn. (20, 22, 24, 26, 28, 31, 35, 37)

Row 2. Ch1 (does not count as a st). In BLO, HTr in same st as Ch and in each st across. Turn.

Repeat Row 2 for a total of:

Newborn: 20 rows.

3-6 Months: 24 rows.

6-12 Months: 26 rows.

1-3 Years: 26 rows.

3-10 Years: 28 rows.

Pre- Teens & Teens: 30 rows.

Adult: 30 rows.

Large Adult: 34 rows.

Joining

Once you have completed all of your rows:

Ch1:

Bring the starting row to the last row worked.
Slip Stitch the 2 ends together.
Insert hook into stitch and corresponding chain and slip stitch.

Once you have joined all the stitches, fasten off with a long tail.

Closing the top of the hat

Thread yarn onto a darning needle, work a running stitch through each row to gather the top of the hat.
Pull tight and secure with a knot using the original tail end.
Weave in ends and turn hat right side out.

Add a faux fur pom pom if you’d like or you can leave the top of your crochet hat plain.
