This free Christmas Egg Cosy is the perfect quick and easy Christmas Crochet Project! It’s great way to use up scrap yarn as you add a dash of the festive season to your breakfast table.

Breakfast on Christmas morning is just as special as the main meal in my family. From Christmas tree shaped crumpets to these Santa hat wearing eggs; it’s the little touches that make the day a little more special! This quick and easy seasonal crochet pattern also makes a great novelty gift – simply add an egg cup to your gift and you’ve got the perfect silly present for those that have a great sense of humour!


This beginners project features a full video tutorials to take you through all the crochet technique needed in this project including:

  •  How to make a Magic Circle
  • How to work in the round
  • How to work in the back loop only
  • how to make the perfect pom-pom

You only need 2 colours in DK weight yarn, and not much of them! So, you can use up those scraps you have lying around! Easy Ribbed Scarf Crochet Pattern

Skill Level: Beginner

Materials:

  • DK Acrylic yarn in 2 colours
  • I used Paintbox Yarns Simply DK in  Pillar Red (114)  as the main colour
  • Paper White (100) as contrasting colour
  • 4mm Crochet hook
  • Pom-pom maker – size 35mm
  • I used Clover Pom-Pom Maker
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors

Finished Size:

To fit a chicken egg

Stitch Abbreviations: UK Terms (US terms in brackets)

St(s)                Stitches

Ch                    Chain

MC                   Magic Circle (adjustable ring)

Sl St                Slip Stitch

HTr (HDc)     Half Treble Crochet (Half Double Crochet)

Dc (Sc)           Double Crochet (Single Crochet)

BLO                Working into the back loop only

Special Stitches:

Half Treble Crochet (HTr)

  • Yarn over hook.
  • Insert hook into stitch.
  • Yarn over and draw up a loop. (3 loops on hook)
  • Yarn over and pull through all 3 loops.

Pattern Notes:

  • Whatever your skill level with crochet, I would always recommend reading through this pattern before beginning. Get in touch if you need any help completing the pattern.
  • This pattern is worked in the round from top down.
  • Project is worked holding 2 stands of yarn together.
  • Ch1 at the beginning of the rounds DOES NOT as a stitch.

How to Crochet This Easy Christmas Egg Cosy

Holding 2 stands of Main Colour together, create a MC.

Round 1: Ch1. Working into centre of MC, HTr 6 times. Sl St to top of 1st HTr to join the round. (6)

Round 2: Ch1. Work 2 HTr into each stitch around. Sl St to top of 1st HTr to join the round. (12)

Round 3: Ch1. *HTr, work 2 HTr in next stitch*. Sl St to top of 1st HTr to join the round. (18)

Round 3-5: Ch1. HTr into each stitch around. Sl St to top of 1st HTr to join the round (18)

Change to Contrasting Colour.

Round 6: Ch1, in BLO, Dc into each stitch around. Sl St to top of 1st Dc to join the round. (18)

Round 7: Ch1, in BLO, Dc into each stitch around.

Fasten off with an invisible join and weave in the ends.

Do not weave in the starting yarn – you’ll use that to secure your pom-pom.

How to add a fringe to a scarf

Adding the pom-pom

  • Using the contrasting colour, make a 35mm pom-pom.
  • With your darning needle, thread the tail of your pom-pom through the centre of the top of your mini-beanie.
  • Tie a knot with the starting yarn and the tails of you pom-pom tightly, 3 times.
  • Trim the strands and make your breakfast more festive by popping the Festive Egg Cosy on top of your boiled eggs!
