Zigzag Crochet Pattern Free Crochet Coaster Pattern

The zigzag crochet pattern which creates the chevron style is one of those styles that never goes out of fashion. It’s easy to update by choosing different colours to make the pattern and create a completely different look.

Like many of my makes, I’ve chosen some bright pinks and purples, but this coaster would also look great worked up in shades of white and black to create a monochrome masterpiece.

This coaster pattern is perfectly matched to the Time for Me Teapot Cosy, that you can find by clicking here. Both patterns feature the zigzag crochet stitch but this crochet coaster pattern is worked in cotton so that it absorbs any drips of condensation whereas the teapot cosy is made in acrylic to repel any drips.

The zigzag / Chevron stitch can be worked so many different ways and as you can see from my other designs including the Bittersweet Margaret Skirt and the Breezy Cushion, the colours used make a big impact on how bold the pattern stands out.

How to crochet a Chevron Coaster | Zigzag Crochet Pattern Free

Skill Level: Beginner

Materials:

DK/Size 3 100% Cotton
I used Paintbox Yarns Simply Cotton DK in the following 3 shades:
A – 462 – Rosy Pink
B- 401 – Paper White
C -443 – Tea Rose

4mm Crochet Hook
Scissors

Abbreviations: US terms (UK in brackets)

St(s) Stitches

Ch Chain

Sc (Dc) Single crochet (Double Crochet)

3Sc (3Dc) Work 3 Single (UK-Double) Crochet into the same stitch

Sc2Tog (Dc2Tog) Single Crochet 2 together (Double crochet 2 together)

Sc3Tog (Dc3Tog) Single crochet 3 together (Double crochet 3 together)

Gauge:

is not essential. Check the length of the 1st row as instructed in pattern notes

Finished Size:

5 inches by 3.5 inches excluding fringe

Pattern Notes:

Whatever your skill level with crochet, I always recommend reading through this pattern before beginning. Get in touch if you need any help completing the pattern.
Ch1 at the beginning of the rows DO NOT count as a stitch.
The fringe is optional but blocking will be required without it.

Special Stitches

Single Crochet 3 Together (Sc3Tog) – UK Double Crochet 3 together (Dc3Tog)

Worked over 3 Stitches:

Insert hook into 1st stitch, yarn over and bring up loop
Yarn over, pull through 1st loop on hook (2 loops on hook)
Insert hook into 2nd stitch, yarn over and bring up loop
Yarn over and pull through 1st loop on hook (3 loops on hook)
Insert hook into 3rd stitch, yarn over and bring up loop (4 loops on hook)
Yarn over and pull through all 4 loops on hook

Time for Me Coaster Pattern | Zigzag Crochet Pattern Free

With A and 4mm hook

Ch25

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, Sc in next 2 sts, *3Sc in next, Sc in next 2 sts. Sc3Tog over next 3 sts, Sc in next 2 sts*, repeat between * and * to last 5 sts, 3Sc in next, Sc in next 2 sts, Sc2Tog across last 2 sts. Turn (25)

Row 2: Ch1, skip st under ch, Sc in next st, Sc in next 2 sts, *3Sc in next, Sc in next 2 sts. Sc3Tog over next 3 sts, Sc in next 2 sts*, repeat between * and * to last 5 sts, 3Sc in next, Sc in next 2 sts, Sc2Tog across last 2 sts. Turn. (25)

Rows 3 & 4: Change to B. Repeat Row .2

Rows 5 & 6: Change to C. Repeat Row 2.

Rows 7 & 8: Change to A. Repeat Row 2.

Rows 9-20: Repeat Rows 3 to 8 twice more for a total of 20 Rows.

Fasten off after Row 20 and weave in all ends.

Move onto adding Fringe. If not adding the fringe, block to shape.

Adding the Fringe | Zigzag Crochet Pattern Free

With C, cut 42, 5 inch lengths

Insert hook into 1st stitch on zigzag edge
Pull through 3 strands of 5 inch lengths
Loop over and tighten to create fringe
Repeat in each peak and dip across end
Repeat across other edge of coaster
Trim each fringe to the same length
