This free backless crochet top pattern uses 1 granny square and some metal chain to create a summer style you can wear with ease.


This square is sized for the fit you want - from XS -5XL giving you the secure coverage to bare that back with confidence.


If you're feeling braver, you can create a smaller square so showcase what you've got!


The necklace closing around the neck add a luxe look and achieve using craft metal chain and securing eyelets in the corners so you can add a chain closure around the back too.

How to crochet a Backless Crochet Top

The first thing to do before starting any crochet garment is to check your measurements - click here to find out more about how to measure yourself for the best fit.


Once you have your measurements, use the size chart below to confirm which size you would like to make.


For this crochet garment, you will be measuring your bust at the fullest point for the maximum coverage. note - the larger the square, the longer the top will become.

Easy Backless Crochet Top Pattern Details

Materials

  • Any DK/Size 3 cotton or cotton blend – I used WeCrochet Cotlin (70% Tanguis Cotton, 30% Linen) 123 yds, 50g in shade Conch
  • 4mm hook
  • Darning needle
  • 4 - 5.5mm eyelets
  • 2 - 12x6mm lobster clasp
  • 4 - 7mm jump ring or split ring
  • 1m - 25mm chain

US terms (UK in brackets)

St(s) - Stitches

Ch - Chain

Ch Sp -Chain Space

Sl St - Slip Stitch

Sc (dc) - single crochet (double crochet)

RS - right side

WS - wrong side


Pattern Notes

  • Please read through the entire pattern before beginning, regardless of skill level. Please contact me ([email protected]) if help is needed to understand any part of pattern.
  • This square is worked in TURNED rounds.
  • There is no beginning chain in the round.
  • Using stitch markers is highly recommended to mark corner ch-2 sps OR all ch-1 sps until pattern is established.
  • Pattern will also look great worked with 2 different colours, changing colour every row.
  • Eyelets and chains are added once the square is complete.
  • Take a moment to go through the pattern and highlight the stitch counts for your size which will be written in length order. e.g Mini (knee length, below the knee) then the row counts wil be XS (S, M, L, XL, 2XL, 3XL, 4XL, 5XL)


Gauge

13 Rounds = 4 inches (10cm) square with a 4mm hook. Use a larger or smaller crochet hook to obtain the correct tension.


How to crochet an easy backless crochet top

Round 1: Ch 4, sl st to 1st chain to create ring, [sc, ch 2 (corner made), sc, ch 1] 4 times in ring, join, turn. (8 sc, 4 ch-2 sps, 4 ch-1 sps)

Note - Using stitch markers is highly recommended to mark corner ch-2 sps OR all ch-1 sps until pattern is established.


Round 2: (Sc, ch 1) in 1st ch-1 sp, (sc, ch 2, sc, ch 1) in next ch-2 sp, [(sc, ch 1) in next ch-1 sp], (sc, ch 2, sc, ch 1) in next ch-2 sp] 3 times, join, turn. (12 sc, 4 ch-2 sps, 8 ch-1 sps)


Round 3: (Sc, ch 1) in 1st ch-1 sp, (sc, ch 2, sc, ch 1) in next ch-2 sp, [(sc, ch 1) in each ch-1 sp across to next ch-2 sp, (sc, ch 2, sc, ch 1) in ch-2 sp] 3 times, (sc, ch 1) in next ch-1 sp, join, turn. (16 sc, 4 ch-2 sps, 12 ch-1 sps)


Round 4: (Sc, ch 1) in 1st ch-1 sp, (sc, ch 1) in each ch-1 sp across to next ch-2 sp, (sc, ch 2, sc, ch 1) in ch-2 sp, [(sc, ch 1) in each ch-1 sp across to next ch-2 sp], (sc, ch 2, sc, ch 1) in ch-2 sp] 3 times, (sc, ch 1) in each ch-1 sp across, join, turn. (20 sc, 4 ch-2 sps, 16 ch-1 sps)


All Sizes: Repeat Round 4 until desired size. Each round will increase by 4 sc and 4 ch-1 sps.


Total rounds estimates:

XS: 37 rounds

S: 42 Rounds

M: 47 Rounds

L: 51 Rounds

XL: 56 Rounds

2XL: 61 Rounds

3XL: 66 Rounds

4XL: 71 Rounds

5XL: 76 Rounds.

Fasten off once desired size achieved or as indicated in size chart, weave ends.

Continue to Adding Chain.

Adding Chain

Secure 1 eyelet in each ch-2 corner space as per packaging instructions

Create 4 lengths of chain:

  • 1 x half the length of the diagonal of the square plus 2 inch
  • 1 x half the length of the diagonal of the square
  • 9” long
  • 9” long
  • Attach lobster clasps to length 1 and length 3
  • Attach length 1 to any corner with jump/split rings
  • Attach length 2 to opposite corner of length 1 with jump/split rings
  • Attach lengths 3 and 4 to any remaining corner with jump/split rings to create a necklace close
