Circular Spiral Granny Square | Free Crochet Pattern

This circular spiral granny square pattern is similar to the Spiral granny square in that 4 colours are worked into the same round, but this spiral pattern is more rounded inside the square.


This example of an unusual granny square pattern is a great addition to any granny square blanket and has a striking look.


You can choose to work it it 4 different colours if you fancy making the square even more unique!

Abbreviations

US Terms (UK terms in brackets)

St(s) - Stitch(es)

Ch - Chain

Ch Sp - Chain Space

Sc (Dc) - Single Crochet (Double Crochet)

HDc (HTr) - Half Double (Treble) Crochet

Tr (DTr) - Treble crochet (double treble crochet)


Skill level: Advanced Beginner


Materials:

  • Aran/worsted weight yarn
  • I used used 60m PaintBox Simply Aran 100% Acrylic yarn in the following shades:
  • A - Shade 250
  • B - Shade 245
  • C -  Shade 250
  • D -  Shade 245
  • 5mm Crochet Hook
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle
  • 5 Stitch markers


Gauge:

  • gauge not essential - Use a larger or smaller crochet hook to obtain the correct finished square size.


Finished Size: 

  • 8" x 8"


Easy Granny Square Blanket Pattern

How to make this Circular Spiral Granny Square

Pattern Notes:

  • Please read through the entire pattern before beginning, regardless of skill level. Please contact me ([email protected]) if help is needed to understand any part of pattern.
  • This square is worked in continuous rounds, with all 4 colours worked in the same round.
  • Beginning ch-1 does NOT count as stitch.
  • Please be aware of colour change indications - the color changes are NOT made at the start of the round.
  • To change colour, pull up a large loop after last stitch, place loop of next colour on hook and continue in next stitch.
  • Placing stitch markers in 1st stitch of each round and working loop of color not being used is recommended.


Round 1: With A. ch 4, sl st to form ring, *ch 1 (does not count as st), (sc, hdc, 2 dc) in ring, place marker in working loop, join next colour. Repeat from * with B, C and D. (sc, hdc, 2dc in each colour)


Round 2: With A, *2 dc, dc in next, 2 dc, leave remaining dc unworked, place marker in working loop, pick up next colour. Repeat from * with B, C and D. (5 dc per colour)



Round 3: With A, *2 dc, dc in next 3, 2 dc, leave remaining dc unworked. Repeat from * with B, C and D. (7 dc, per colour)


Round 4: With A, *2 dc, dc in next 5, 2 dc, leave remaining dc unworked. Repeat from * with B, C and D. (9 dc, per colour)


Round 5: With A, *2 dc, dc in next 7 sts, 2 dc, leave remaining dc unworked. Repeat from * with B, C and D. (11 dc per colour)

Round 6: With A, *2 dc, dc in next 9, 2 dc, leave remaining dc unworked. Repeat from * with B, C, and D. (13 dc per colour)


Round 7: With A, *2 dc, dc in next 11 sts, 2 dc, leave remaining dc unworked. Repeat from * with B, C, and D. (15 dc per colour)


Round 8: With A, *2 dc, dc in next 13 sts, 2 dc, leave remaining dc unworked. Repeat from * with B, C, and D. (15 dc per colour)



Easy Crochet Granny Square Blanket

Round 9: With A, dc *[2 tr, ch1, 2 tr], dc, hdc, sc, leave remaining dc unworked. Repeat from * with B, C, and D. (4 dc, hdc, sc per colour)



Fasten off all colours and weave in ends.
