Why use a Christmas Tree Skirt?

Adding a tree skirt to the base of your Christmas tree, whether real or fake, can hide the unsightly tree stand or wires from the lights, all while also giving your Christmas tree a handmade final flourish.

Traditionally, tree skirts were used to protect the floor from candle wax and fallen needles, but now they are used more as a decorative addition to corresponding wrapping and other decorations.

Should you add a tree skirt on before adding the tree?

This crochet Christmas tree skirt can be added at any point as it features a complete opening and is tied together once fitted.

There are also tree skirt designs that only have an opening for the top of the tree stand that should be added before the tree is inserted into the stand.

Even if you have finished decorating your tree, you can stitch up this pattern and add it afterwards.

What size Christmas Tree Skirt should I use?

You can measure the width across of the lowest branches your Christmas tree and aim to create your tree skirt 2-4 inches wider than the tree, but luckily there is standard sizing for Christmas tree skirts to allow you to make your skirt in advance of purchasing your tree.

Recommended Christmas Tree Skirt Sizes:

  • Table top trees (2-3 foot)- 20” tree skirt
  • 4-6 foot trees – 42” tree skirt
  • 7 foot trees – 48” tree skirt
  • 8 foot + – 56” tree skirt

Finished tree skirt size is measured across the middle of the skirt when laid flat.

This crochet Christmas tree skirt can be made in any size, but continuing to repeat the rows in the same order to increase the finished width.

  1. Help!!
I am following this pattern and when I lay my piece out flat the two ends (where the ties will be) don’t line up. It looks like a slice has been taken out!

    Please help!!

    1. There should be a small space between the edges when it is laid flat, but it’s shouldn’t be noticeable when it’s around the tree base and the ties are secured.
