Classic Patchwork Granny Square | Free Crochet Pattern

The use of colours in crochet is what can take a simple stitch can turn it in to something stunning.

There are lots of different way's to work colours:

  • Striped
  • changing colours in the rows
  • Tapestry Crochet
  • changing colours within the row while carrying the colour
  • Fair Isle/Intarsia
  • Changing colours within the row without carrying the colour and allowing the strands to float

This free granny square pattern uses the tapestry crochet technique where the colour not in use for the stitches being worked is carried along the row and worked over, underneath the stitches.

Top Tips for Tapestry Crochet

This technique can feel fiddly and a little challenging the first time so here are some top tips for tapestry crochet:

  • don't work too tightly - release your tension and check there is enough movement/stretch when you change colour
  • check that the strand of yarn being worked over isn't poking through - give it a gentle pull before changing colour
  • Take your time - this is not a technique to rush when you are learning, practice is progress
  • Don't get twisted - working with tangled yarn is not fun, take a moment to flip your project over your hook, towards you at the end of each row to reduce the number of twists in your yarn.
