Granny Stitch Coaster | Free Crochet Pattern

Granny's Fancy Coaster is inspired by one of my favourite ways to spend an afternoon - having tea and cake surrounded by the ones I love; along with one of my favourite cakes.

The French Fancy, which will always bring back such happy childhood memories of a Friday treat after school comes in 3 colours and flavours that I matched when making my coasters - you could make your crochet coasters in any colour you'd like!

I really love the granny stitch, and it features is so many of my crochet patterns because it's easy to crochet and it can be worked in so many other ways than just a square! This pattern creates a Granny Rectangle - so only slightly different to a traditional square.

Continue on to adding fringe

Adding Fringe

For each coaster:

  • Cut 30 lengths of yarn measuring 10 cm each (this will allow you add a fringe of 2 strands in each stitch)
  • Take 2 strands.
  • Fold them in half so that they form a loop at one end.
  • Insert hook into a stitch along the shorter edge of the coaster.
  • Hook the 2 stands over the hook and pull through the stitch.
  • Bring the ends of the strands through the loop created.
  • Pulling gently on the strands, tighten the loop securely.
  • Once all fringe has been added, trim the ends so they are the same length.
