If you're looking for a handmade shawl that will be a well loved addition to your handmade wardrobe, then look no further than the Granny Comes Out Of her Shell shawl.

It's lightweight, open fabric is perfect to throw over your shoulders during the day or evenings.

This was my main inspiration for this crochet pattern - something that would work for dressing up any outfit with a splash of colour too.

The long length of this shawl means you can style it a number of ways, from tying it round to simply draping it; the more options the better in my book.

Granny Stitch Inspiration

This crochet shawl was also designed with a variation on my favourite stitch - the granny stitch.

I love this stitch so much that each year I host a Granny Stitch Bundle around Granny Square Day. As much as I love a traditional Granny Square, the stitch can make so much more that square alone.

This pattern uses the granny stitch on it's own and in a shell formation which is framed. The framing of the stitches is what creates the open fabric, to create the added intrigue.

What yarn should you use for this crochet shawl?

I used a 1000m cake of cotton to create this shawl and it was the first time I used this yarn:

The colours available are outstanding and the colour change is so long that it's perfect for a project like this.

The yarn is constructed with 4 strands of super soft cotton, and periodically there will be a tiny knot where 1 strand is changed in colour. This continues throughout the cake until all strands are changed and the process begins with the next colour.

These little knots can be left in your project - no need to cut and weave (unless you really want to), they are secure enough as they are.

This yarn is only a 4ply - which is smaller than I am used to, but I used a larger than recommended hook size to keep the project from being too small.

The only thing I had to change while working with this smaller stranded yarn, is how I kept my tension.

Usually, I simply clutch the strand in the palm of my non-hook hand, but as it was so tiny (compared to DK), I found I needed to add tension by weaving the strand through my fingers rather than just clutching it.

I'd highly recommend snapping up some of these cakes - especially when there are on offer as the 1000m size is perfect for this and many different shawl patterns.
