Reindeer Crochet Candy Cane Holder | Free Crochet Patterns

There is nothing better than putting up your Christmas decorations and adding a handmade touch with some cute crochet ornaments.

So many of us have happy memories surrounding the magic of Christmas which involve the history of the ornaments that hang on the tree.

I used to purchase a new, special tree ornament to hang amongst the branches, nestled with the other happy memories of Christmas past. For the last few years, I have added a new handmade decoration to my tree. 

I also like to create quick projects for the holidays that can be given as gifts and small tokens of thanks to those that I love - and I know a good few people in my life who will be receiving a Reindeer candy cane holder this year - those lucky things. 

The great thing about this pattern is that it's extremely simple, using only the US Single crochet stitch (UK, Double Crochet)  which is worked in a spiral so there is no obvious seam across the finished project. There is also no sewing - That makes it a super quick make!

To keep the time down when making a batch of these - I've made 20 so far this week, ready for a craft fair, I did opt to glue on the eyes and nose.

The googly eyes I used are 1cm wide. I did try the smaller eyes, but they just didn't look right. Click here to see the ones I purchased.

How to Crochet a Reindeer Candy Cane Holder

Skill Level: Beginner

Materials:

• DK (Size 3) Acrylic yarn - I used Hayfield Bonus DK in shade Taupe.

• This pattern is worked holding 2 strands of yarn at the same time to create a thicker yarn. This equivalent to 1 stand of chunky/bulky yarn. Either yarn weight is suitable for this pattern, worked with a 5mm hook
• 5mm Crochet Hook
• Darning needle
• Scissors
• 1cm (10mm) Googly eyes - https://amzn.to/3Ehv8D8
• 2cm fluffy pom poms.  I used these ones from Amazon - https://amzn.to/3rssua0

Abbreviations: US terms (UK in brackets)

St(s)                      Stitch(es)

Ch                          Chain

Sc (Dc)                  Single Crochet (Double Crochet)

Gauge:

• Gauge is not essential

Finished Size:

• 1.5" across and 3 inches tall

You can adjust the width and height to match the candy canes you are using - instructions are provided in the pattern.

Pattern Notes:

• Whatever your skill level with crochet, I always recommend reading through this pattern before beginning. Get in touch if you need any help completing the pattern.
• This pattern is worked holding 2 strands of yarn at the same time to create a thicker yarn. This equivalent to 1 stand of chunky/bulky yarn. Either yarn weight is suitable for this pattern, worked with a 5mm hook.
• The pattern is worked in a spiral. This means that the rounds are NOT JOINED, you simply continue working into the 1st stitch of the previous round and there are no chains made between the rounds either.

Reindeer Candy Cane Holder | Free Crochet Patterns

With 5mm crochet hook and 2 stands of DK/Size 3 yarn (or 1 strand of chunky/bulky yarn)

Ch7, (If you want need to make a bigger Reindeer, simply increase the number of chains until it is the width required and add 1 chain before moving onto Round 1. Please note that the stitch count will not match for an adjusted starting chain)

Round 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, Sc in next 5 ch, Working on other side of ch, Sc into each ch across. (11)

Round 2: Sc into 1st Sc from previous round and each st around. (11)

Rounds 3-12: Repeat Round 2.

Adding the Hanging:

When you have reached the end of Row 12:

• crochet to the middle of one of the sides
• Ch8
• Slip stitch into the same stitch as the start of the chain
• Fasten off and weave in ends

Making it a Reindeer

Even though my googly eyes were self adhesive, I also added a blog of hot glue from my glue gun before attaching to ensure they would not fall off when little hands got hold of their reindeers.

Take a moment to place the eyes and pom pom as the nose before attaching to ensure you are happy with the placement. If you'd like a kooky looking reindeer, place one eye a little higher than the other - it's very en-deer-ing!
