Autumnal Ear Warmer | Free Crochet Headband Pattern

Simple Crochet Ribbing

From the sound of leaves crunching under your feet as you stroll through the park, the faint smell of bonfire smoke to the tips of your ears turning pink from the cold; these are all the signs of early Autumn I absolutely love!

Skill Level: Beginner

Materials :

  • 125m Sidar Jewelspun Aran (100% Acrylic; 500m/546yds per 200g ball)
  • I used shade 843 (Setting Sun) – Click here to purchase
  • 5.5 mm Crochet Hook
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle
  • 2 stitch markers

Abbreviations

St(s)       Stitch(es)

HTr        Half Treble Crochet 

BLO       Back loop only

PM         Place marker

Pattern Notes :

  • Whatever your skill level with crochet, I would always recommend reading through this pattern before beginning. Get in touch if you need any help completing the pattern.
  • You will first make the headband before making the band to go around and cinch the headband to create the bow shape. 
  • A Half Treble crochet will be worked in to the 1st and last stitch of each row to create a neat edge to help with sewing up. 
  • Ch1 does not count as a stitch throughout this pattern.

How to Make an Autumnal Ear Warmer

Pattern 

Ch77.

Chain should measure 22 inches. If yours is longer, try making your chain and completing the pattern with a smaller hook. 

Row 1: HTr in 2nd Ch from hook and in each Ch aross to end. Turn.(76) Place marker in 1st stitch when completed.

Row 2: Ch1 (does not count as a st), HTr in to same stitch as Ch1, HTr in BLO in each st across. HTr into final st. 

PM into 1st St once made to help easily recognise which stitch to not work into back loop.

Rows 3-14: Repeat Row 2

At the end of Row 14, fasten off leaving a long tail to sew up. 

Sewing Up The Headband

Place the ends of the headband together, ensuring it is not twisted and whip stitch the ends together, forming the headband.

Small Band

Ch15.

Row 1: HTr in 2nd Ch from hook and in each Ch across to end. Turn.(14)

Row 2: Ch1, HTr in each stitch across. Turn.(14)

Row 3: Repeat Row 2. Fasten off leaving a tail to sew up.

Sewing Up & Together 

  • Wrap the small band around the headband, over the seam. cinching the headband into a bow shape. 
  • Whip stitch the ends of the smaller band together. 
  • Check the position of the headband and adjust until you are happy with the cinching. 
  • Sew the seam of smaller band to the headband to secure them together and ensure the smaller band doesn’t slip and show the seam of the headband. 
  • Weave in all the ends and pop on your walking shoes, ready to step it out knowing you ears will be toasty!
