Staggered Crossed Double Granny Square Pattern

Create a unique granny square with this variation of the crossed double crochet stitch. The Staggered Cross Double crochet granny square shows an almost zigzag pattern and uses a cluster stitch to make a open fabric granny square.

I love the crossed Double Crochet stitch and this variation creates such a different look to the traditional stitch that I couldn’t not include this pattern.

This easy granny square pattern will show you how cluster stitches are not so different to decrease stitches; both stitches reduce the stitch count but the finished look of the stitch is quite different.

The change to the stitch count made by the Crossed Double Cluster stitch is made up by adding a chain 1 between the cluster stitches. This results in a granny square that has a lightweight, open fabric without massive holes.

This square could be worked up in as many colours as you like – I’d love to see it stitched up in a variegated yarn to see the colours change in those cluster stitches.
